Frequently asked questions about self storage

  • Can I store anything I want?
    • We would like you to store anything you need to but there are some restrictions. Items which we have identified as hazardous and/or not suitable for Containerised Storage, and which we do not allow our customers to store in our secure storage facilities are:
      •   toxic, pollutants or contaminated goods
      •   firearms, munitions or explosives
      •   radioactive materials
      •   hazardous goods
      •   living plants or animals
      •   food or perishable goods
      •   cash and securities
      •   illegal goods
      •   waste

  • What notice do I have to give to move-out of my Container Self Storage unit?
    • One of the benefits of using Northern Self Storage is that you are not contracted to a long term lease. Please remember to give us at least fourteen (14) days written notice before the end of the month of your intention to move-out.

  • How short or how long can I store for?
    • Our minimum period is one (1) month and there is no limit to how long you can stay.

  • Are my goods safe and secure?
    • We ensure there is a large range of security features at our stores, ranging from cctv cameras to electric fences and access control systems.

  • How high is it inside my storage unit?
    • Most of our units are 2.4 metres high.

  • What do I do if I choose the wrong size unit?
    • No problem, you can transfer to another Container size unit anytime and as many times as you want.

  • Help! I don’t know what unit size to choose?
    • Our well trained staff can assist you to select the Container size that best suites you. Remember if you need regular access to your stored items then a larger space where you can pack aisles will be beneficial. If you know you will only access the Self Storage Container once you move-out then a smaller space can save in costs.

  • Are there any contracts I have to sign?
    • You will need to sign a lease before you have access to your storage unit. Please remember to give us at least fourteen (14) days written notice before the end of the month of your intention to move-out.

  • What are the store hours?
    • Access is granted 07:00 – 17:00H to our Self Storage Containers.

      Please note that our office hours are different to our access hours. The office is open from 08:00 – 17:00 on weekdays only.

  • What if I need to move-in now?
    • No problem, our well trained staff will assist you with your move-in and you will have access to your storage container on the same day. Just remember to bring along your ID or passport and proof of address.

  • Do I have to reserve a unit before I get there?
    • You don’t have to reserve a unit but this is advisable. To ensure you don’t lose the storage space that best suites you, you can reserve a unit by paying a deposit. Check with our staff to book your space now.

  • Are there any discounts?
    • There are many Northern Self Storage specials for new and existing customers. Specials can be arranged if bulk Storage is required. Call NSS and ask our helpful staff for more information.

  • Why does Northern Self Storage not accept cash on site under any circumstances?
    • In the interests of safety for our customers and staff, Northern Self Storage does not accept cash as a form of payment.

      All payments should be made by debit order, EFT or direct deposit.  You will have the opportunity to complete a debit order form for simple and hassle free payments.

  • When do I Pay?
    • Your first payment is due on or before your move-in date. Thereafter rent is due on the first of every month, however we will place a debit order on your behalf to avoid the hassle of making your monthly payment.

      Please be aware that for the safety of our customers and staff we do not accept cash on site.

  • Are there any hidden costs?
    • Our helpful staff will explain all you need to know when you move-in, however it is important to note that you will need:
      •   One month deposit
      •  Your own padlock.

  • What does self storage cost?
    • This depends on the Container size that you have selected. We have 3, 6 and 12 metre Container Self Storage units available If you are not sure what size will suit you contact one of our well trained staff and we will assist you.

  • What is self storage?
    • Container Self storage is simple, hassle free and easily accessible. Simply select the Container size, in the location that best suited you and then move-in. There are no long term contracts to sign and you can move-in on the same day. Access is free of charge and you can change your unit size any time you want. Not sure what size is right for you?
